Compass Puerto Rico

Casillas del Caminero (Hormigueros)

Hi!

Today I will show you a little piece of a historic treasure.  They are called Casillas del Caminero (Houses of Road men).  In the 19th century Puerto Rico had a very significant increase in its population, agriculture and business with other countries.  Because of this, roads were needed to help people get around important towns in Puerto Rico.  But these roads, needed some attention so that they can remain fit for everyone to use.  The Spanish Government built 47 Casillas del Caminero spanning the entire system of roads that Puerto Rico had at that time.  It was the job of the people that lived in these houses to fix and give maintenance to the roads that where close to them.  Out of the 47 houses that where built, only 21 remain.  The rest where victims of natural disasters and ageing.

This one in particular is located in Hormigueros, on the Road 114 Kilometer 8.5.  It was abandoned in 1980.

A complete detailed research on these houses can be found here.  It was put together by a Professor of The University of Puerto Rico named Jose Mari Mutt.

The model in this historical place is called Namir Massini.   If you are interested in looking at more pictures from this photo shoot please visit here.
